 Our services

We offer a complete professional service for publishers, pharmaceutical companies and medical information services creating, developing and producing information products and services for the medical and pharmaceutical markets. Using Index+ , the text and multimedia information management system we offer high quality, cost effective development of database resources, CD-ROMs and Web or secure internet services.

We develop and provide database repository systems with on-line or off-line data entry for the acquisition and archiving of text, image and multimedia content. Data can be exported from these repositories to develop print, CD-ROM and Web products and services.

Medical and pharmaceutical information must be accurate, current and accessible when and where it is needed, often in an emergency. We have developed clear professional interfaces to enable fast search and retrieval of data with multiple links to relevant information. Innovative "identification engines" for retrieving information from incomplete or partial search specifications have been particularly successful in enabling the identification of poisonous plants, and unknown tablets and capsules in medical and forensic applications.

 What's so special about Index+?

Innovative indexing delivers very fast retrieval times using free-text, boolean and keyword searches with extensive hyperlinks. This is essential both for publishing repository systems and for published products and information services, and ensures fluent searching and browsing through large databases.

Index+ is scalable. Repositories, archives and editorial applications can be developed for MS Windows, NT or Unix, in standalone or server/client systems including mixed networks to suit requirements. CD-ROM and CD-ROM/Web hybrid products can be developed for MS-Windows 95, 98 or NT. The Index+ Web Gateway allows Web access via any standard browser. The Index+ Z39.50 Gateway allows access to electronic Library systems.

Index+ support tools enable the creation of the required interaction design which can be as sophisticated or as simple as required. Collaborating with your designers or with our design partners, Diverse Interactive, the highest possible design and production values can be applied to suit the needs of a variety of audiences from professional to consumer. Wellcome Library: The Medical Photographic Library Online

Medical Photographic Library Online - broadening access

Broadening access to the 150,000 strong collection of images held by the Medical Photographic Library (MPL) is a core aim of the Wellcome Library. System Simulation has provided a complete, integrated system based on its Index+ database software for cataloguing and digitising the entire collection and providing picture library management and image delivery. Remote searching and browsing, image retrieval and delivery via the Internet will provide a fast and powerful service to MPL's users. Cross searching capabilities are provided through the use of common standards (typically Z39.50) to interrogate multiple data sources.

The system integrates with the main Trust network and the Library and Information Services system to provide an unrivalled online service for its user community worldwide. The system will scale and service the needs of MPL well into the future.

The components of the Index+ MPL Online system

  • Digitising studio - supporting the digitising programme and migrating high- and low-resolution images to the image arena of the Image catalogue database.
  • Image catalogue - providing facilities for data entry and editing of all catalogue records, with unique image IDs, metadata standards, field and record structures, terminology and authorities, configured to international standards and MPL requirements.
  • System Administration/Security - supporting different levels of user access for system administrators, internal user groups and individuals, external users including registered and authorised account holders.
  • Web Access to, and delivery of, images - allowing fast searching and browsing of the catalogue with transaction management and image delivery over the Internet.
  • Integration with main Wellcome Library and Information Services - integrating transparently with the main Wellcome Trust network and its Library and Information Services system.

The Medical Photographic Library

The 150,000 or so images in the Wellcome Trust Medical Photographic Library cover the history of medicine and the history of human culture, from ancient times to the present day - from depiction of ancient healing techniques, through beautiful anatomical engravings, to contemporary biomedical images and clinical photographs. The material represents an unsurpassed collection - but is only part of the Photographic Library's riches. Its holdings also include photographs of Tibetan Buddhist paintings, ancient Sanskrit manuscripts written on palm leaves, beautifully illuminated Persian books, and much more. The source of these images is the Wellcome Trust History of Medicine Library, while the contemporary clinical and biomedical material comes from teaching hospitals and research laboratories throughout the UK and beyond.
